Which opaque pigment can save you the most?

Which opaque pigment can save you the most?

Opacity is a key characteristic in paint quality. When a coating is opaque, the pigment particles absorb and disperse light sufficiently in order to prevent it from reaching the substrate, covering it better.

In sectors such as automotive, decoration or industry, opaque coatings are in high demand. This is because their use allows for better coverage of the substrate to which they are applied. As a result, application times, quantity of product applied and, therefore, cost can be reduced.

A clear example of this can be found in decorative paint. Use of an opaquer coating will reduce the number of coats required to cover the substrate. As such, labour and cost is reduced – a smaller quantity of paint will be needed.

At Comindex, we recommend various high opacity pigments, both organic and inorganic, from our represented company DCL:

  • Bismuth vanadates PY.184 – In addition to high opacity, this large family of inorganic yellow pigments provides high colour strength and excellent durability. We recommend its use for both solvent-based and water-based decorative paints, industrial paints and automotive. We also have special products for coil coating and powder coatings.
For architectural painting, it is very important to have pigments with high resistance to alkalis. This is due to the fact that both the substrate to which the paints are applied and the coating itself have a basic pH. We have a range of products – 2GTA/2GTAA/3GMXA/RMXA – that meet this characteristic, making them ideal for this application.

  • Benzimidazolone Yellow 151 PY.151 (7751) – With a greenish shade, in addition to possessing excellent opacity this organic yellow pigment is designed to improve weathering resistance and achieve higher colour strength than the rest of PY.151.
Its use is recommended for solvent-based decorative paint, industrial paint and powder coating.

  • Benzimidazolone Orange 36 PO.36 (7336) – This organic pigment has a high opacity in both aqueous and solvent-based systems. It has excellent rheological properties and easy dispersion. Also noteworthy is its excellent weathering resistance compared to the rest of the PO.36 organic pigments.
We recommend it for use in formulations for industry, automotive, decoration (water and solvent-based) and powder coatings.

  • Pyrazolone Orange, PO.34 (7034) – This is a blue shade orange organic pigment with very high opacity. It is noteworthy for its excellent weathering resistance and is an excellent choice for the replacement of molybdate orange (PR.104).
We recommend this product for decorative coatings (aqueous and solvent-based), industrial and powder coatings.

In addition, these products are a good option for the formulation of products without lead pigments (PY.34 and PR.104) for industrial applications.
