Safer and less toxic halogen-free flame retardants

Flame retardants are additives which make our daily lives safer. They are often invisible in formulations, and we are unaware of their presence. However, their incorporation helps us to prevent or delay fires and therefore increase the chances of evacuation or the fire brigade arriving in time.  

In addition, there is growing concern for safety, health and the environment. And, together with the restrictions on the use of halogenated components, the transition towards halogen-free flame retardants (HFFRs) is becoming increasingly important.

LUVOGARD HF P70 is a liquid, transparent and halogen-free flame retardant for use in thermoset resin applications – polyester, epoxy, acrylics, polyurethanes…

This type of fire retardant allows you to reduce the quantity of alumina type fillers (ATH) and therefore improve the properties of the end product. As such, we recommend it for both combined and individual use depending on the type of formulation.

It presents very low solubility in water, allowing excellent weathering resistance, and it does not emit smoke or odour following its decomposition.

As we have discussed, it is a halogen-free flame retardant and, as such, it does not decompose into halogenated derivatives following contact with fire. This means that it complies with the various current regulations.

In addition, Lehmann&Voss has facilities to carry out the following fire tests:
 

  • Vertical flame test: UL94 (IEC/DIN EN 60695-11-10)
  • Oxygen index: LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index, DIN EN ISO 4589-2)

Under these regulations, they offer the option to test new formulations and examine their effectiveness against fire.

In conclusion, you can use halogen-free flame retardants in your formulations for thermoset systems and test them at the manufacturer's facilities to see whether they offer a good level of efficacy.
