Purified silicone additives – without D4/D5/D6

Comindex S.A. offers a new range of silicone additives from BYK-Chemie for coatings, thermostable systems, printing inks and adhesives, with a lower content of cyclic silicones.

In the manufacturing process of silicone polymer additives (modified PDMS) cyclic silicones can be generated as impurities:

D4 - Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (CAS 556-67-2)
D5 - Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (CAS 541-02-6)
D6 - Dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (CAS 540-97-6)

D4 is classified as CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Reprotoxic) Class II (Repr. 2) in accordance with regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, so it is a requirement to report its presence from 0.1% (w/w) on the SDS and labelling.

Additionally, since 27 June 2018, D4/D5/D6 were included in the EU REACH Candidate List of SVHC as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances (PBT) and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substances. From that moment, it is mandatory to report the presence of these three substances from 0.1% (w/w) on the SDS and labelling.

It is important to highlight that the limit of 0.1% (w/w) refers to each one of the components separately and not the sum of all three:

BYK-Chemie is aware of the importance of reducing the content of these substances in its products as much as possible and that is why it has added a purification stage in the manufacturing of these additives. BYK-Chemie has designed this additional process which it has been using for years in the manufacturing of some of its antifoamers (to reduce VOC content) and other additives intended for architectural paints.

With these purification techniques, BYK-Chemie has created alternatives to the silicone additives with D4/D5/D6 content higher than 0.1%. This way, the new additives are not required to be labelled as SVHC. For this reason, workers do not require the high levels of protection that handling these types of substances entail. The purified additives can be substituted for the same dosages and applications as the previous additives, adapting much better to modern formulations.
