PCBL Chemical has entered into a technology transfer agreement with the Chinese company Ningxia Jinhua Chemical Co. to manufacture acetylene black in India.

Acetylene black is a specialised, high-conductivity carbon black with key applications in high-voltage cables, lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicle charging systems, conductive plastics, paints, and coatings.

PCBL plans to establish its first acetylene black production facility in India, aiming to meet the rising demand from the country’s electric battery sector while also catering to global markets in batteries, semiconductors, and conductive materials. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance supply chains for essential materials used in conductive technologies.

Over recent years, PCBL has significantly expanded its range of speciality products. It has introduced more than 50 new varieties under the brand names Bleumina for engineering plastics, Nutone for inks, paints, and coatings, and Energia for conductive applications, including conductive polymers, electrostatic discharge, cables, and batteries. The addition of acetylene black to its portfolio will further strengthen PCBL’s position in the fast-growing conductive materials market.

In addition, PCBL recently established a joint venture, Nanovace Technologies, dedicated to developing nanosilica products for lithium-ion battery anodes. The company’s pilot plant in Palej is expected to come online in the coming months.

Bringing acetylene black technology into its portfolio supports PCBL’s strategy to accelerate growth in key sectors influenced by global trends, including the energy transition, modernisation of power grids, electrification of transport, and advancements in the semiconductor industry.

The global acetylene black market, currently estimated at around 60,000 metric tonnes, is projected to grow by 19% to 20% annually, reaching approximately 150,000 metric tonnes by 2030.

This technological advancement positions PCBL to compete in high-growth markets, move up the value chain, diversify its product offerings, and achieve a substantial increase in profit margins
