Many metals exhibit corrosion when they come into contact with oxygen, whether it derives from air or water. Corrosion of these metals can cause irreparable damage to materials or machinery, safety problems for workers or users and even contamination problems for the products that are manufactured or stored in them.
Figure 1: Elements involved in corrosion
For these reasons it is very important to avoid the appearance of corrosion, either by using metals with a very low corrosion rate or by using corrosion inhibitors.
In the detergency sector, the majority of products are water-based, a factor which favours the appearance of corrosion. In this case, it can affect both the metal on which they are being used as well as the packaging that contains the product, if it is metallic (e.g. aerosols).
Corrosion can cause issues ranging from degradation of the packaging or container or oxide contamination of the product through to deterioration of product properties, an unattractive appearance or corrosion of circuits which can lead to leaks.
For these reasons it is important to choose a good corrosion inhibitor. In this article we will discuss, on the one hand, temporary corrosion inhibitors, also called anti flash-rust, for metal cleaning cases where the contact time is short in duration. On the other hand, we will also deal with long-lasting corrosion inhibitors for the protection of packaging or containers.
It is also important to consider the metal, the type of corrosion and the corrosion rate to correctly choose the inhibitor to be used.
Our represented company Labema has developed a wide range of water-based products which are ready to add to a formulation. All of the products employ a combination of different corrosion inhibitors, therefore increasing their efficiency due to the synergies and complementarity between different active materials.

A sustainable range – VEGERUST – has also been developed which reduces environmental impact by using natural and renewable raw materials. This new range reduces the carbon footprint without losing properties and without affecting the price.
Examples include:
Volume of antifreeze (%) | Volume of water (%) | Freezing point |
EMADOX AFC or VEGERUST OAT in the antifreeze (% by weight) |
33 | 67 | -17 ºC | 7,50 |
40 | 60 | -25 ºC | 6,25 |
50 | 50 | -36 ºC | 5,00 |

In conclusion, in any system where metals make contact with oxygen and/or water it is very important to protect the metal with a corrosion inhibitor. By choosing the most suitable product for this short-term protection, we avoid deterioration of the tools or machinery used (also protecting the user who uses them) and we also avoid possible product contamination, maintaining all of its properties. For these purposes, Comindex has a large variety of corrosion inhibitor combinations which ensure maximum efficiency.
