Epoxy resins with high yellowing resistance

Epoxy resins with high yellowing resistance

Friday, 31 August, 2018

COMINDEX offers a broad range of epoxy products under the EPOTEC trademark which are suitable for protective or anti-corrosion coatings and civil engineering applications.

Our product range includes bisphenol-A-based epoxy resins which, due to the presence of aromatic rings and under the action of UV rays, suffer deterioration causing system yellowing and a chalking effect. To prevent this, we offer two cycloaliphatic epoxy resins: EPOTEC YDH 184 and EPOTEC YDH 3000.

EPOTEC YDH 184

Cycloaliphatic resin: diglycidyl ether of hydrogenated phthalic anhydride. Due to the fact that the cyclic ring is hexa-hydrogenated, this resin provides enhanced yellowing and weather resistance than standard bisphenol-A resin. It is suitable for formulating outdoor coatings. The choice of a suitable curing agent also plays an important role in preventing any alteration of and even enhancing these properties.

The viscosity of EPOTEC YDH 184 is similar to the reactive diluents (400-900 cP, 25ºC) frequently used to reduce the viscosity of standard bisphenol-A resins. This low viscosity allows it to be formulated into low VOC or even 100% solids coatings. EPOTEC YDH 184 can also be cured with anhydride curing agents at high temperatures.

Applications:

  • Coatings for outdoor application on metal, wood and concrete surfaces
  • High solids coatings including baking finishes
  • Electrical potting and encapsulating compounds (electrical insulation)

EPOTEC YDH 3000

A diglycidyl ether of hydrogenated bisphenol-A, Epotec YDH 3000 is free from aromatic rings; hence, this resin is expected to give good resistance to ultraviolet light and weathering, making it suitable for outdoor coating applications.

Although the resin itself already benefits from outdoor deterioration resistance, the choice of curing agent also plays an important role in getting better performing formulations.

Epotec YDH 3000 shows much lower viscosity (2,000-3,000 cP, 25ºC) than standard bisphenol-A resin (12,000 cP, approx. 25ºC), making it suitable to develop cost effective coating formulations with increased filler content.

Applications:

  • Coatings for outdoor application on metal, wood and concrete surfaces
  • High solids coatings including baking finishes
  • Modifier for industrial acrylic finishes
