Characteristics of epoxy resins: types and applications

Thursday, 12 September, 2024

Epoxy resin is a thermostable polymer that cures upon the addition of a hardener. Accordingly, given its resistance to high temperatures, it is widely used across the industrial sector.

Epoxy systems are found in a wide range of applications due to their excellent properties, which include:

  • High mechanical strength
  • Chemical resistance
  • Moisture resistance
  • High-temperature resistance
  • Strong adhesive properties
  • Excellent electrical insulation
  • Outstanding corrosion resistance

At Comindex, we offer a broad range of epoxy resins and reactive diluents to formulate coatings with optimal performance.

We also provide a selection of more sustainable epoxy resins, derived from renewable raw materials, for demanding formulations requiring an added level of sustainability.

Within our epoxy resin product range, we feature Bisphenol-A-based resins in both liquid and solid forms, Bisphenol-F-based resins, novolacs, cycloaliphatics, and solid resins, as well as reactive diluents.

Below, we highlight the applications for each type of epoxy resin:

  • Unmodified liquid Bisphenol-A-based epoxy resins are used in anti-corrosion coatings, industrial maintenance paints, underwater coatings, structural adhesives and civil engineering applications.
  • Solid Bisphenol-A-based epoxy resins have a low molecular weight and are supplied in solution form for easier processing. They offer faster drying times and a longer shelf life compared to standard liquid epoxy resins; also, they are used in anti-corrosive primers, marine paints and varnishes.
  • Unmodified Bisphenol-F-based epoxy resins provide excellent chemical resistance, strong mechanical properties and lower viscosity compared to Bisphenol-A-based resins. They help reduce crystallisation tendencies and are used in adhesives, laminates, coatings and civil engineering applications.
  • High-functionality novolac epoxy resins offer superior resistance to high temperatures and chemical exposure, making them ideal for corrosion-resistant coatings and industrial maintenance paints.
  • Cycloaliphatic epoxy resins provide enhanced durability under exposure to UV radiation, making them suitable for outdoor applications.
  • Solid epoxy resins are perfect for powder coating and can coatings applications.
  • Reactive diluents are based on various chemical structures — aliphatic, aromatic and cycloaliphatic — with different levels of functionality. They offer flexibility, adhesion, impact resistance and viscosity adjustment options.
