Industrial cleaning and degreasing agents are solutions used to remove dust, oil, grease and wax residues and other unwanted materials from different surfaces, such as pipes, metal parts or tools, that are made of steel, aluminium, plastic and concrete.

Most of the cleaning agents currently available on the market contain chemicals that have adverse effects on skin and respiratory tract. Commonly used chemicals include chlorinated solvents, hydrochlorofluorocarbon solvents, modified alcohol solvents and hydrocarbons.

Suppliers of cleaning and degreasing products for industrial maintenance tasks are required to adapt to new regulatory and customer requirements, focused on minimising the impact of such products on human health and the environment. At the same time, the cleaning solutions must perform well, be cost-effective and suitable for various applications.

Comindex currently markets Galaster™ EL98, a non-toxic biosolvent used as an alternative to traditional toxic solvents commonly employed on the cleaning and degreasing market. It can be blended with other solvents to formulate tailor-made cleaning solutions.

Galaster™ EL98 is a natural and 100% bio-based ester of lactic acid, liquid at room temperature, soluble in water and organic solvents, occurring naturally in many food products like apples, oranges, pineapples and cocoa. It is made by esterification of bio-ethanol with lactic acid. Besides its use as food additive, Galaster™ EL98 is being used more and more for:

  • Cleaning of metal parts: its ability to remove different types of dirt from metal parts has been studied and revealed to be successful in a host of contaminants including: silicone oil, cutting fluid, disposition fluid, cocoa butter, dioctyl phthalate, mineral oil, lithium white grease, synthetic cooling fluid, etc.
  • Cleaning printing presses: on account of being soluble in both water and organic solvents, Galaster™ EL98 is particularly suitable for cleaning offset presses where hydrocarbon-containing inks and aqueous wetting solutions are used. It can replace chlorinated solvents and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is also particularly suited for replacing glycol ethers based on ethylene glycol, such as 2–ethoxyethyl acetate, due to very close evaporation rates unlike other propylene glycol-based glycol ethers.
