Halogen-free, environmentally friendly flame retardant

Flame retardant additives have enabled us to reduce, prevent, or slow down both the flammability and spread of fire. Thanks to technological advances, Comindex offers a flame retardant that is free of halogens and is more environmentally friendly than many other options on the market.

Intumescent paints are coatings specifically designed to provide fire resistance to structural elements, such as steel, wood and other materials. These coatings, which contain ammonium polyphosphate (APP), a carbon source and a foaming agent, undergo a chemical reaction at high temperatures. The APP decomposes to release phosphoric acid, which then reacts with the carbon source to form a protective char layer that insulates the material and delays its involvement in a fire.

In this article we wish to present you with the PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) flame retardant additives from our represented company PRESAFER. These additives are halogen-free and are more environmentally friendly than conventional flame retardant materials available on the market.

PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) can be applied in coatings for wood, industry, textiles and thermostable resins. It is based on ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and offers superior properties compared to conventional APP.

Key features of PreniphorTM EPFR-APP (II) include:

  • High degree of polymerisation
  • Good weather resistance
  • Excellent crystalline structure
  • Low content of low-polymerisation substances
  • Excellent thermal stability

Different grades are available depending on particle size and surface treatment. These grades are as follows:

  • PreniphorTM EPFR-APP216: Highly recommended for intumescent coatings. The most cost-effective standard grade.
  • PreniphorTM EPFR-APP222H: Standard grade with smaller particle size.
  • PreniphorTM EPFR-APP224: Standard grade with larger particle size.
  • PreniphorTM EPFR-APP262: Encapsulated with melamine-formaldehyde. Highly recommended for applications that have strict water resistance requirements, especially in outdoor settings.
  • PreniphorTM EPFR-Q7: Finer particle size, providing increased transparency.
