In view of the current situation with COVID-19, it is hugely important to take precautions when it comes to hygiene in order to avoid infection given that the virus is so easily transmitted. Aside from the need to wash your hands regularly in order to beat the illness, cleaning and disinfecting the objects we regularly touch at home is vital.
We at Comindex are recommending a series of formulations to disinfect your hands and your homes.
Home hygiene – Hydroalcoholic formulations for domestic disinfection
Disinfecting your home, which is exposed to microorganisms from the outside, is absolutely essential. As a result, we are recommending three hydroalcoholic home cleaning formulations that can be used for general cleaning and to combat potential sources of microorganisms:
PEROXIDE-FREE, ETHANOL-BASED FORMULATION (CL-9050)
Component | Manufacturer | Function | Weight (g)
Distilled water | Solvent | 10.0
RHEOBYK-7420 ES (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
Etanol (96%) | Disinfectant | 86.0
RHEOBYK-7410 ET (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
TOTAL | 100.0 |
It is prepared in a container with distilled water where RHEOBYK-7420 ES is stirred in (1500-2000 rpm) for 2 minutes. Next, ethanol is stirred (1000 rpm) into the solution, which is then stirred for a further 15 minutes. Lastly, RHEOBYK-7410 ET is added, also while still stirring (1000 rpm) for 5 minutes.
PEROXIDE-FREE, ISOPROPANOL-BASED FORMULATION (CL-9051)
Component | Manufacturer | Function | Weight (g)
Distilled water | Solvent | 20.0
RHEOBYK-7420 ES (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
Isopropanol (99%) | Disinfectant | 75.0
RHEOBYK-7410 ET (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
Glycerin | Humectant | 1.0
TOTAL | 100.0 |
This formulation is prepared in the same way as the description for CL-9050 with glycerin added at the last minute while stirring (1000 rpm) for around 15 minutes.
It may be important to add hydrogen peroxide into the formulation, not because of its disinfectant properties but rather to avoid the product from potentially being contaminated with bacteria or microorganisms during packaging or production. For this reason, we are considering a formulation that incorporates it with a low concentration:
FORMULATION WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (CL-9052)
Component | Manufacturer | Function | Weight (g)
Distilled water | Solvent | 20.0
RHEOBYK-7420 ES (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
Isopropanol (99%) | Disinfectant | 72.0
RHEOBYK-7410 ET (40%) | BYK | Rheological additive | 2.0
Glycerin | Humectant | 1.0
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) | Antiseptic | 3.0
TOTAL | 100.0 |
This formulation starts with the incorporation of distilled water and RHEOBYK-7420 ES while stirring (1500-2000 rpm) for 2 minutes. Then, isopropanol is stirred in (1000 rpm) and stirring continues for another 15 minutes. Next, RHEOBYK-7410 ET is added in the same way as the isopropanol and stirring should continue for an additional 5 minutes. After this time, glycerin is added and the mixture is stirred for yet another 15 minutes. Lastly, hydrogen peroxide is added and it should be stirred for a final 2 minutes.
One of the benefits of these formulations is that they may be used once they have been prepared without any further alterations needed as they can be pumped to break the viscosity and thus obtain a solution that easily flows under pressure.
Personal hygiene – Hydroalcoholic formulations for hand disinfection
If you want to formulate a product to clean and disinfect your hands, we recommend a disinfectant hydroalcoholic gel formulation:
DISINFECTANT HYDROALCOHOLIC GEL FORMULATION (CL-9053)
Component | Manufacturer | Function | Weight (g)
Distilled water | Solvent | 27.0
LAPONITE RD | BYK | Rheological additive | 0.8
Etanol 96% | Disinfectant | 67.2
Glycerin | Rheological additive | 1.0
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) | Antiseptic | 4.0
TOTAL | 100.0 |
It is easy to prepare. In a suitable container, deionised water is poured and stirred (500 rpm) using a sprocket. Laponite RD is added very slowly for around 15 minutes. Once a see-through solution has been obtained, ethanol is stirred in (1000 rpm) and stirring continues for 15 minutes. Next, glycerin is also stirred in and stirring again continues for 5 minutes. Lastly, while still stirring as previously, hydrogen peroxide is added and the entire solution is left to be mixed thoroughly for 5 minutes.
All these formulations offer the same benefits:
