DOUBLECURE 200, the non-yellowing photoinitiator

Monday, 9 January, 2017

Choosing the right photoinitiator in UV-light curing systems is vital to obtain an optimal result in your finishes and the final features of your coatings.

The most widely used photoinitiators on the market tend to turn yellow during the curing process and even subsequently over time. This is something we should seek to avoid primarily when working with or formulating white and clear systems.

In order to minimise this colour change, DOUBLE BOND CHEMICAL has developed DOUBLECURE 200, a liquid photoinitiator with excellent non-yellowing performance. It can be used on coatings for woods, metals, plastics, and on UV curing adhesives.

DOUBLECURE 200 is soluble in most organic solvents and is compatible with most unsaturated pre-polymers, resins and monomers typically used in the UV curing sector.

The recommended dose is approximately 2% weight of the overall formula, although this may vary according to the composition and thickness of the system, source of light and line speed.

If in addition to avoiding yellowing it is necessary to enhance the cured speed, so it is similar to that of DOUBLECURE 173 (2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-1-one), DOUBLE BOND CHEMICAL advises combining DOUBLECURE 200 with DOUBLECURE 225, a light-coloured anime synergist. The photocatalyst to amine ratio will be determined on the basis of a specific system-based compromise between avoiding yellowing and achieving a high curing speed.

DOUBLE BOND CHEMICAL (DBC) produces and develops specialist products for the formulation of UV curing coatings. Based in Taipei, Taiwan, DBC is a worldwide supplier and employs an extensive range of techniques in the design and manufacture of its products in order to attain optimal quality standards.
