PA- and BPA-free phenolic resins for Can Coatings

Comindex distributes Askofen R 9600: a phenolic crosslinker that makes it possible to develop formaldehyde-free (<0.1%) and Bisphenol-A-free coatings for metal packages for epoxy and polyester systems with high elasticity and excellent chemical resistance.

Phenolic resins are widely used as crosslinkers for metal packages combined with polyester or epoxy resins. Askofen R 9600 provides coatings with remarkable adherence, resistance and flexibility and it has excellent sterilisation and chemical resistance with the exception of strong alkalis.

One drawback of phenolic resin-based formulations is the presence of free formaldehyde. In 2016, formaldehyde was classified as “a probable human carcinogen; category 1B”. The concentration limit for labelling is > = 0.1% in weight. ASK Chemicals has managed to develop a phenolic resin with such a small content of free formaldehyde that it can be used to formulate coatings for tins containing food without labelling.

The resin Askofen R 9600’s excellent compatibility with polyester systems and other resins allows to formulate without Bisphenol-A (BPA), which is banned in France for food contact applications. Moreover, Askofen R 9600 meets regulations for contact with food (US) FDA CFR 21 § 175.300 and (EU) 10/2011, annex 1.
